Photographer Research- Ansel Adams
These are three of Ansel Adams' photos. Ansel was a nature photographer and mostly shot in black and white. My favorite is the first one. This picture is called "Moon Over Half Dome". The subject and setting in the photo is a half moon over a half dome in Yosemite National Park. The lighting is only on one certain part of the half dome and a very dark shadow is seen on each of the sides of the photograph. This photo brought attention to the skill of photographing the night sky and also helped make photography a fine art. His photos, especially this one, helped make Americans more environmentally aware when the United States government hired Adams to photograph America's national parks.

ICA Analysis
The photographer of this photo is Matthieu Venot. The photograph is part of three photos in a series called "Who Wants Sky?". It was taken in 2014. It is unknown what size the image is but it is a square. The setting is a city building. The image is additive. The photograph focuses on a triangular arch that has a staircase with a red railing in the background. The photograph also contains many shadows. The elements and principles of design that apply to this piece are line, color, shape, and form. Line applies to this photo because of the different directions that the shadows spread out in. The archways that are in front of the staircase are also visible, so they create sharp lines towards the center of the photograph. Color applies to this image because of the red railing on the staircase that stands out from the pavement and sides of the building. Shape also applies to this photo because of the triangle that the beams form from the bottom of the picture. Finally, form applies to this photograph because of the space seen from the front archway and the back one against the wall and the staircase. Unity, variety, symmetrical balance, dominance, contrast, and scale are all arranged to order and control. Unity applies to this because of the unity created by the archways. The beams also create variety, symmetrical balance, dominance, and scale. Contrast is created by the shadows from the beams. The piece is realistic, because it is a photograph. When I look at the piece, it feels exciting, because the lines lead my eyes in different directions. The viewer response that the piece evokes is probably the same, because there is not much else happening in the picture. The mood of the work is neutral because of the subject matter, but can be seen as happy because of the lighting. The work does not tell a story. The photographer took the picture to unify with the other two photos in his series. I like the piece for its shadows and lines. I also like the red railing on the staircase in the middle of the picture. It should not be a particularly important piece in art history because there are many photos like it. The work fits into this time period because of the modern architecture of the building that was captured. This piece may have had influence over others' work because there are many photos that I have seen that are just like it. The title of the series makes sense to the series because the other two photos have shots of the sky in them. However, the staircase portrays height, especially because the entire subject matter of the photograph seems so close to the sunlight.
